invalides

thursday: architecture class
we spent the entire walk at invalides since its huge- louis xiv needed a ton of space to 'take care' of the invalids of war. i didn't realize how close it was to school. i just never turn right instead of left when i get out the metro to go to class.
this side faces the seine, equipped with cannons

entry to the courtyardentrance of chapel for veterans (built to fit 4000, no kidding)
it shares a sanctuary with the king's chapel. so if you break through the glass (later addition) at the end here, you'll find yourself in the extravagantly grand private chapel of louis xiv. am i a terrible person to compare it to two bedrooms sharing a bathroom? absolutely no disrespect but i mean it makes sense, its a good use of space and a practical design(who knew french had it in them?) please don't shoot me, merci beaucoup.
now we're talking, quote from my prof "as baroque as it gets in paris" chapel of louis xiv. so basically an attack in his childhood scarred him for life, he was terrified of living in paris (hence, versailles), and so he only got to use this chapel 4 times during his day trips into the city. now, it houses napolean's tomb. well...technically, ashes. personally, i would love to admire the facade much longer if not for the shindig the pigeons were having right out front. ughhhh i hate pigeons.
baldachino [bal-duh-kee-noh]: Architecture A stone or marble structure built in the form of a canopy, especially over the altar of a church.
i just really like the sound of this word.

the rest of day is going to the next entry. my legs are still sore from all the walking. seriously, must you pave the paths with cobblestones AND crushed stones? i know we're no invalids but this still n'est pas agreable!
